KCB lift Driftwood Sevens title in Mombasa

KCB RFC claimed the first title of the 2025 National Sevens Circuit after edging Strathmore Leos 15-14 in a thrilling Driftwood Sevens final held on Sunday at Mombasa Sports Club.

The bankers started strongly, overwhelming the students with pace and precision in the first half. Two tries from Elvis Olukusi and another from in-form winger Floyd Wabwire handed KCB a commanding 15-0 lead at halftime. Wabwire, who was later voted Player of the Final, showcased his electric runs and clinical finishing throughout the tournament.

Strathmore Leos refused to go down quietly and mounted a spirited second-half fightback. Barnabas Owuor sparked hope for the university side with a solo try before the Leos were awarded a penalty try to close the gap to just one point. Despite intense late pressure, KCB’s defense held firm to secure their first major trophy of the season.

Speaking after the match, KCB head coach Andrew Amonde praised his players’ commitment and focus.

“I am very happy with this win. The boys worked hard during training and showed character in this final. Our focus now turns to the next legs of the circuit where we want to maintain this momentum,” Amonde said.

Wabwire capped off an outstanding weekend with three personal awards — Player of the Final, Top Try Scorer with eight tries, and Top Point Scorer — confirming his rise as one of the circuit’s most exciting talents.

KCB’s journey to the final saw them dispatch Menengai Oilers 29-0 in the quarterfinals before edging Kabras Sugar 10-5 in a tense semifinal clash. New signing George Ooro, formerly of Strathmore Leos, also scored his first try for the bankers earlier in the tournament.

The National Sevens Circuit now shifts to Nakuru for the Prinsloo Sevens, the second leg of the series, set for August 2-3 at Nakuru Athletics Club.
