Sportpesa League: AFC Leopards and Kariobangi Sharks drop points
AFC Leopards were once again left frustrated after being held to a 1-1 draw by Sofapaka in their Sportpesa League clash at Ulinzi Sports Complex on Saturday.
The result marked Leopards’ 11th draw of the season, extending a worrying trend for the 13-time champions, who are chasing their first league title in 27 years.
Sofapaka, winners of the 2009 crown, continued their reputation as a difficult opponent for Ingwe, having now won 11, lost 11, and drawn 11 of their 34 past meetings.
Sofapaka made a fast start when Djafari Satala scored in the 5th minute, putting Leopards under early pressure and forcing coach Fred Ambani to rethink his game plan.
The Leopards responded well, with Boniface Munyendo striking back in the 17th minute to level the score. Despite both sides creating chances, the match ended without further goals, with Sofapaka taking home a valuable point.
In the early kick-off at Kasarani Annex, Kariobangi Sharks were also unable to find a breakthrough as they settled for a goalless draw against Bandari. The result meant Sharks also dropped points in their opening outing, failing to build early momentum in the campaign.
Meanwhile, KCB sit top of the table after the opening weekend of fixtures. The bankers, led by coach Robert Matano, claimed an impressive 2-0 win over 12-time champions Tusker in Friday’s season opener at Kasarani Stadium.
With three points already in the bag, KCB will look to mount a serious challenge for their first ever league title.
The second round of matches is set to intensify as teams seek early consistency in what promises to be another highly competitive Sportpesa League season.
