Sportpesa League: KCB ready for Tusker test ahead of new season kick off
KCB will begin a fresh chapter on Friday evening when they face former champions Tusker FC at Nyayo Stadium from 6pm, under the guidance of new head coach Robert Matano.
The Bankers, who ended last season in ninth place with 42 points, have set their eyes on a maiden league title. Matano, the most successful local coach in Kenyan football, has been tasked with turning that dream into reality after years of near misses.
Speaking during a luncheon at the KCB Leadership Centre, Matano said he was encouraged by the effort and spirit in his new-look squad.
“We have built a team that combines experience, energy, and ambition. The players understand the task ahead, and our focus is to start the season strongly against Tusker. It won’t be easy, but I believe in the character and quality of this group to deliver results and make our fans proud.”
KCB has been one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market, bringing in players across all positions. Goalkeepers Arnold Matumule from Rutsiro FC and Elvis Ocharo Ochieng from Nairobi City Stars add depth at the back.
The defense has been strengthened with Rowland Makati, Fadhili Masoud, Josphat Mukhwana, Kenneth Wambua, Gideon Werre, Amatton Samunya, and Clyde Sinaji Navade.
In midfield, the club has added experience and creativity with Humphrey Mieno and Apollo Otieno, alongside Jack Okello Onganya, Fortune Omoto, and Richard Omondi. On the wings, Bonface Omondi Owino brings pace, while in attack, Kelvin Etemesi Injili and Congolese striker Tedja Wanumbi are expected to lead the charge for goals.
At the heart of the team, Matano has handed the captain’s armband to long-serving defender Nahashon Alembi, who will guide the squad both on and off the pitch. “It is an honor to captain this team at such an exciting time,” Alembi said.
“We have a good mix of experienced and young players, and together we are determined to fight for the club’s first league title. The responsibility is big, but I am ready to lead by example.”
With a decorated coach, new signings, and fresh ambition, KCB head into the new Sportpesa League campaign full of belief. Their opening test against Tusker promises to be a thrilling encounter as the Bankers seek to prove that this could finally be their season.
