Sportpesa League: KCB edge Tusker to kick off new season with win
KCB FC made a flying start to the new Sportpesa League season after beating Tusker FC 2-0 in their opening match played on Friday evening at the MISC Kasarani Stadium.
The Bankers looked sharp from the first whistle and their pressure paid off midway through the first half. December Kisaka whipped in a fine cross from the left, which Boniface Omondi calmly slotted past Tusker goalkeeper Joseph Ochuka to hand KCB the lead.
Tusker’s defense struggled to contain the Bankers’ pace on the flanks, and the second goal arrived just before halftime. A low shot from debutant Richard Omondi rattled the post, but with Ochuka already beaten, Omondi was quick to react and tapped home the rebound to double the advantage.
The victory was the perfect start for KCB’s new coach Robert Matano, who was pleased with how his players handled the match. He said his side had set out to make a statement in their first fixture and praised the team’s discipline and execution against a tough opponent.
Tusker had a chance to reduce the deficit in the second half when they won a penalty, but striker Eric Kapaito blasted his effort over the bar. It summed up a frustrating night for the brewers, who could not find a way back into the contest.
Tusker coach Charles Okere downplayed the defeat, saying the campaign is still young and his team will recover. He backed Kapaito to return to scoring form despite the missed penalty, noting his striker’s experience and proven goal-scoring record.
KCB will now turn their attention to Mathare United in their next league match, hoping to keep their early momentum going.
