SportPesa League unveiled with Sh20 Million prize pool for top clubs

Kenyan football has been handed a huge boost after Football Kenya Federation (FKF) announced a tripling of the prize money for the top-flight champions, raising the winners’ purse from Sh5 million to Sh15 million.

FKF President Hussein Mohamed confirmed the changes on Tuesday, September 16, during the official unveiling of the new SportPesa League name and logo in Nairobi. The increase marks the biggest payout ever for league winners and is seen as a turning point for local football.

“For years, our champions walked away with only Sh5 million. From today, that figure is Sh15 million,” said Hussein. “We are not stopping here. Our goal is to grow this prize pot to at least Sh50 million in the future.”

Under the new structure, runners-up will take home Sh3 million, while the third-placed team will pocket Sh2 million. In total, Sh20 million will be shared among the top three teams.

The boost has been made possible through a joint contribution of Sh10 million each from FKF and the league’s title sponsor, SportPesa. This is a significant improvement from the earlier prize pool of Sh6 million.

SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri said the new prize structure was designed to make the league more attractive and competitive.

“We want players and clubs to feel they are competing for something meaningful,” said Karauri. “Initially, we had set aside Sh6 million, but after talks with the FKF President, we doubled our support. We are committed to making the SportPesa League one of the most rewarding competitions in Africa.”

The announcement has been received with optimism across the football community, with many seeing it as a fresh beginning for the country’s most popular sport. The prize money is expected to help clubs invest more in player welfare, infrastructure, and competitive performance.

For FKF, the move is also a statement of intent as they seek to restore confidence in the domestic league. Hussein said the federation is determined to raise standards and ensure the competition matches its name.

“This is only the beginning of a journey to transform Kenyan football,” he said. “Our clubs deserve better, and so do our players and fans.”

The new-look SportPesa League is set to kick off with renewed energy, as teams now have a bigger prize to chase and fans can expect more intense competition.
